Oil on canvas late 19th century English Barbizon School. Five cows at the drinking trough at dusk in a woodland undergrowth. A white cow isolated on the left and four cows drinking on the right. Cloudy sky with touches of yellow. Dimensions of the canvas alone: 30 x 45.5 cm, measured on the back on the original keyed-stretcher. With gilded frame approx. 44 x 60 cm. No signature visible on the recto. Examined with a magnifier. Not dismantled. Green monogram TH interlaced on the back of the canvas. A capital T with an interlaced H. Blue stamp of the canvas preparer in four lines, very faded: PREPARED BY LONDON, typical of Winsor Newton Robertson Co London 1880-1910. Confirms late 19th-century period. Green inscription TH. Oil with visible impasto and spatula marks; photos day. English Barbizon technique, not a 1960 production. Original yellowed varnish with fine age craquelure; good condition. Missing gilding on the frame corners worn. No restoration, no repainting, no tear. Attributed to the Circle of Thomas Hart (1830-1916), British animalier. Another possibility: Thomas H Gibb (1833-1895), same circle. Provenance: private collection, southwest France, flea market. Style: Late 19th-century English Barbizon School, pastoral naturalism, Victorian, Cattle genre, Animal landscape.
