Duchamp (Marcel).- A pair of red knitted gloves owned by Duchamp

Duchamp (Marcel).- A pair of red knitted gloves, prepared at Duchamp's instruction with "Merde" embroidered on one palm, both fore-fingers and thumbs a little frayed, c.1940s; with a facsimile of a typed note by Claude Fredericks explaining the association, and a dossier on the relationship between Duchamp, Norton and Fredericks (sm. bundle) *** An unusual and charming survival from Marcel Duchamp’s private life, particularly intriguing for his direct involvement in their creation and the characteristically irreverent mirror-image lettering. Duchamp wore the gloves during his flight from Europe to America in 1942, on board former hospital boat, the Maréchal Lyautey. The gloves subsequently passed into the possession of Claude Fredericks (1923–2013), American poet, diarist, founder of the Banyan Press and influential professor at Bennington College, where his students included Donna Tartt and Bret Easton Ellis. Fredericks’s extensive journals, documenting his friendships and encounters with artists and writers of the period, are held by the Getty Research Institute. The accompanying dossier was compiled from copies of his journals and correspondence, the originals of which are preserved in the Getty archives.
