DRUM Melanesia, Papua New Guinea, Iatmul people Hard, dense wood with an aged patina L. 107 cm Provenance: - Philip Goldman, Gallery 43 - Former collection of Franco Ignazio Castelli (1920–2002), London, April 7, 1971 - Cornette de Saint Cyr auction, March 24, 2017, lot 164 A slit drum carved at one end with a zoomorphic head. The other end is missing. The body is engraved with geometric motifs. Among the Iatmul people, who live along the Middle Sepik River, clans possess slit drums or gongs with distinct shapes and functions. They are kept in the large Men’s House. These drums are used both for long-distance communication and for music during sacred and ceremonial events.
