Doxander vittatus (Strombus vittatus) – 68 mm – Perfect...

Article description & Scientific data Scientific name: Doxander vittatus (Linnaeus, 1758) – formerly Strombus vittatus. Common name: Banded Volute (Engl. Vittate Conch). Quality grade: GEM (Flawless shell; the wide, slender outer lip – the “wing” – is completely undamaged, the tower-like raised apex is pointed and undamaged). Size: 68 mm (6.8 cm). This represents an excellent, well-proportioned size for an adult collectible piece. The species typically ranges from about 35 mm up to rare giant forms of over 85 mm. Special feature: As is typical for the family of volutes, this species has a very narrow, crescent-shaped operculum, which primarily serves the animal for movement (burst jumping). Family: Strombidae (Volutes). Origin & Habitat Geographic origin: Cebu, Philippines (Central Visayas, Indo-Pacific). Habitat: A marine shallow- to deep-water species. It lives on expansive sand-, mud-, and seagrass beds at depths usually from 5 to 40 meters. The animals are often retrieved by local fishermen on night trips or as bycatch.
