Dish - Majolica - Diana Nymphs - late 19th century

Refined and imposing parade plate in polychrome maiolica, finely historiated. The central scene, of great decorative impact and inspired by classical myth (inspired by the famous episode of Diana and the Nymphs Bathing from Ovid's Metamorphoses), depicts the goddess Diana surrounded by her nymphs in a lush wooded landscape at the edge of a body of water. The plate presents the typical game-fire color palette with tones of blue, ramina green, ochre yellow, and manganese, in the historicist figurative style linked to the Italian maiolica tradition (e.g., Castelli / Central Italy). The back is glazed with white-pinkish maiolica glaze with a metal hanging hook for wall display. Material: Maiolica / Hand-glazed and hand-painted ceramic Period: Late 19th – early 20th century (Neorinascimental / Historicism style) Theme: Mythological scene (Diana and the Nymphs Bathing) Dimensions: Diameter: 42.5 cm Height/Depth: 3.5 cm Condition: Front: Decoration intact with beautiful bright colors. Shows the natural, widespread glaze craquelure characteristic of the piece’s craftsmanship and era. Edge and Back: Small glaze chips/edge nicks along the rear rim and slight firing imperfections typical of manual work. No invasive restoration visible.
