Dewata Rambut Sari — Goddess of Water on the Naga Bearer...

Dewata Rambut Sari — Goddess of Water on the Naga Bearer...

- English (primary description) - There are sculptures that decorate a room — and there are sculptures that carry a world within them. This mid century Balinese deity figure belongs to the latter category. Carved from Alstonia scholaris (pule) — the sacred wood traditionally reserved for divine representations — this work embodies the poetic tension between myth and modernity that defined the Pita Maha / Art Deco Bali movement. In the mid 20th century, Balinese master carvers began merging ancestral iconography with refined modernist lines, creating a visual language that felt both ancient and newly awakened. Here, Dewata Rambut Sari, the Goddess of Water, stands poised upon a Naga serpent bearer. In Balinese cosmology, the Naga is not merely a creature; it is a guardian of the underworld, a vessel of protection, a symbol of the eternal flow that connects humans, gods and nature. The goddess’s Garuda crown rises like a celestial crest, echoing the mythic bird that bridges heaven and earth. The diagonal carving lines — subtle, rhythmic, intentional — reveal the hand of an atelier master from the Ubud school (circa 1950–1970). These lines were not decorative choices; they were signatures of craftsmanship, guiding light across the surface and animating the figure with quiet movement. The patina, untouched and softly oxidised, carries the breath of decades. This sculpture lived in a Private collection, Hengelo (The Netherlands), where it was cherished not as an ornament but as a spiritual presence — a reminder of Bali’s devotion to harmony, ritual and the unseen forces that shape daily life. Its monolithic weight, refined detailing and mythological depth make it an exceptional opening piece for any curated collection seeking authenticity, symbolism and emotional resonance.
