Desk - Chestnut burl wood - Geometric Marquetry

!!! WARNING !!! --- !!! WARNING !!! !!! PICKUP ONLY !!! !!! WARNING !!! (16259 Falkenberg (Mark), Brandenburg – near Berlin) Italian mid-century writing desk with artistic marquetry and rootwood – 2 drawers Design & Construction You are bidding on an Elegant Italian desk from the mid-century era, probably from the 1960s, in a classic Parsons form. The furniture combines a clear, straight silhouette with an exceptionally decorative treatment of the wood surfaces. Particularly characteristic is the elaborately worked tabletop. Differently figured woods have been joined into a geometrically structured parquet/marquetry surface. Cross, square and rectangle structures form a regular pattern and, together with the varying grain patterns, create a lively, individual appearance. The pronounced rootwood look gives the surface additional depth. The legs also display decoratively grained wood sections. They visually resemble rootwood, possibly chestnut rootwood; a professional wood identification was not performed. The combination of geometric marquetry, natural wood grain, and the restrained Parsons construction makes the desk a distinctive Italian vintage piece. Features & Craftsmanship - Italian desk - stylistic classification: around the 1960s - Mid-Century design - classic Parsons form - rectangular, straight-lined construction - elaborately designed parquet/marquetry tabletop - geometric cross, square, and rectangle structures - expressive rootwood/burlwood look - decoratively grained wood portions on the legs - 2 integrated, spacious drawers - lacquered or surface-treated wood surfaces - sturdy and stable construction The two drawers are harmoniously integrated into the front and offer practical storage without compromising the furniture's clean design. Dimensions & Weight - Width: approx. 137.16 cm - Depth: approx. 68.58 cm - Height: approx. 73.66 cm - Weight: approx. 30–40 kg Condition The desk is in good, age-appropriate used condition. No obvious gouges or damage to corners or edges were detected. There is a visible darker discoloration of the veneer/wood surface in the middle area of the tabletop. This is evident in the photos and represents the most noticeable age- or wear-related feature. At the underside there is an old, partly torn label. It is no longer fully legible. Manufacturer & Provenance A definitive manufacturer or designer attribution is not currently possible. The label on the underside is too damaged to identify the maker, workshop, or original gallery beyond doubt. The design, construction, and material effect point to Italian mid-century furniture. A connection to Maurice Dufrêne appearing on the 1stDibs comparison page is not adopted as a manufacturer or designer attribution for this table, as there is not sufficient proof. International reference 1stDibs documents a very similar Italian Parsons desk with two drawers, geometric parquet/marquetry design, and rootwood surface. The reference item on there is dated to the 1960s and described as walnut wood, rosewood/sapeli, and a lacquered surface. The listed dimensions are also 54 × 27 × 29 inches, i.e., approx. 137.16 × 68.58 × 73.66 cm. For this comparison item, a list price of USD 6,800 is given. This is a professional international dealer asking price and not a proven sale price. The matches in form, dimensions, two drawers, and decorative marquetry make this offering an interesting international reference for the present furniture. Pricing classification The 1stDibs reference shows that comparable Italian mid-century desks with elaborate marquetry and rootwood design were offered in the international vintage furniture market at the upper price range. The actual value of the present item depends mainly on condition, provenance, and any potential later manufacturer attribution. The existing discoloration of the tabletop and the label that is no longer fully legible should be considered, as should the elaborate hand craftsmanship and the overall good state of preservation. Pickup Pickup only – no shipping. The desk can be picked up after arranging an appointment in 16259 Falkenberg (Mark), Brandenburg – near Berlin. This is a household liquidation.... Given the size and approximate weight of 30–40 kg, a suitable transport option is recommended.
