Aldo Londi. Ceramics Between Art and Design Born in Montelupo Fiorentino in 1911, Aldo Londi discovered the world of ceramics at a very young age, starting as an apprentice in a local factory. This marked the beginning of a path that would leave a deep mark on the history of Italian artistic craftsmanship. After working at Ceramiche Artistiche F.lli Fanciullacci, he joined Bitossi in 1935, with whom he would build the most important professional relationship of his life. World War II temporarily interrupted his activity. Taken prisoner and relocated to South Africa, Londi did not abandon his vocation: even far from Italy, he set up a rudimentary furnace and continued to experiment, showing that making ceramics had become an essential part of his identity. Back in his homeland, he resumed work for Bitossi and, in 1946, took on the role of artistic director. From that moment he contributed decisively to the renewal of production, balancing creativity, formal research, and attention to the needs of mass production. Thus were born pieces of furniture capable of combining artisanal quality, originality, and a modern language, anticipating that happy convergence of art and design that would characterize the best Made in Italy. His creations gradually gained international recognition, taking part in major exhibitions: from fairs in Prague and Düsseldorf to the Milan Triennale, from the International Competition of Contemporary Ceramics in Faenza to the Ceramic Art Biennale of Sesto Fiorentino. In 1976 he left the artistic direction, while continuing to frequent the factory even after retirement. The international diffusion of his works, marketed in numerous countries, also through Studio Rosenthal, testifies to the value and expressive power of his research. Aldo Londi died in Montelupo Fiorentino in 2003, leaving a legacy that goes beyond individual creations: a new idea of ceramics, where traditional craftsmanship meets the freedom of invention and design becomes a part of daily life.
