DENMARK. Pewter Pattern 2 Frederik d'or, 1825. Altona Mint. Frederik

DENMARK. Pewter Pattern 2 Frederik d'or, 1825. Altona Mint. Frederik VI. NGC Unc Details--Scratches. Cf. Fr-284; cf. KM-697; cf. Hede-1; cf. Sieg-34; Schou-1; Bruun-8063. Weight: 10.54 gms. Mintmaster: Johan Friedrich Freund (IFF). Engraver: Johannes Conradsen (IC). This piece has been made by joining an obverse and a reverse off-strike in pewter. Of the highest numismatic importance. This exceptional tin pattern of Freund's new "invention" to strengthen international trade, the so-called d'or coins, is highly interesting as it bears the date 1825 - the year before the first gold coins were struck. However, the King had already approved the coinage on 9 August 1825. In light of this, it is not surprising that Freund, even at that early stage, had requested the highly skilled Copenhagen medalist Johannes Conradsen to prepare pattern dies. Estimate: €2,000 - €3,000. Provenance: From the L.E. Bruun Collection. To view supplemental information and all items from the L.E. Bruun Collection, click here.
