DENMARK. Penny, ND (1047-75). Lund Mint. Svend II Estridsen. NGC Unc Details--Peck Marked. Hauberg-30; Hauberg Collection-cf. 1009; Moltke-79 (plate coin); Bruun-1851; Weight: 0.95 gms. Moneyer: Sæwine. Hairline split in flan. Exceptionally well-preserved with all runes clearly legible, a pleasant grey toning and remnants of original luster. One of the most intriguing runic coin legends on Danish coinage, executed in runes of the early medieval futhark, seemingly identifying the moneyer by a cognomen: Seunia Ulfieds Frnta = Sæwine, Ulfied's kinsman ("frænde"). A similar practice is commonly found on Viking Age runestones. Estimate: €2,000 - €3,000. Provenance: From the L.E. Bruun Collection. To view supplemental information and all items from the L.E. Bruun Collection, click here. Please note: Bid amounts do not include VAT.
