DENMARK. Penny, ND (1018-35). Lund Mint. Cnut (Knud den Store). NGC AU Details--Peck Marked. Hauberg-10; not in Hauberg Collection; C. J. Becker-K 2/112; Bruun-1318; Weight: 1.02 gms. Moneyer: Ilue. Nicely struck, very detailed and with an attractive even toning. Probably the only exemplar in private hands and of the utmost importance. Posthumous Pointed Helmet imitation with fully legibly legends. The reverse legend: + ILVE ON LVDI: RIST: is especially interesting. "Rist" is the third-person singular past tense form of the verb "Rista" (to carve). On runestones, "Rist" can occur without an object, as seen here, but on coins, such a die-cutter formula is entirely without parallel. Estimate: €3,000 - €4,000. Provenance: From the L.E. Bruun Collection. To view supplemental information and all items from the L.E. Bruun Collection, click here. Please note: Bid amounts do not include VAT.
