DENMARK. Naval Battle of Køge Bay Silver Medal, 1710. Frederik IV. NGC MS-63. Galster-299; JS-604; Ossbahr-157; Bruun-15499. Diameter: 60 mm. Weight: 94 gms. By Peter Berg(P BERG / PB). Presumably a later striking from the late 18th / early 19th century; a well-toned, Mint State example of this rare and attractive Naval Battle medal; light hairlines in obverse fields. The Naval Battle in Køge Bay 1710 stood between the Danish and Swedish fleets. The Danish fleet, en route to Scania with Russian troops, in what was to be the last attempt to retake the lost lands of 1658 and 1660, had anchored in the bay following storms and decease. The Swedish got wind(!) of this and quickly dispersed their fleet. The Danes were unprepared for the attack and only due to a hesitation from the Swedish admiral Wachtmeister a complete disaster was avoided. The Danish flagship Danebroge, pride of the Danish fleet, caught fire due to firing its cannons against the strong wind. Onboard Danebroge, Admiral Huitfeldt ordered the ship anchored to prevent it from drifting into the Danish fleet formation, and as it lay in the bay, unable to maneuver and on fire, it continued to shoot and fight until the fire reached the powder storages and the ship blew up, taking most of it valiant crew to a fiery and watery grave.
