DANDRÉ-BARDON (Michel-François). Costumes of Ancient Peoples. Paris, Charles-Antoine Jombert, Louis Cellot, 1772 [1774 for Volume II]. 3 volumes in-4, veined calfskin, gilt roulette, smooth decorated spine, red and green title labels (Contemporary binding). First edition, featuring a frontispiece, a portrait, and 362 copperplate engravings. (Colas, no. 791; Racinet, p. 144; Vinet, no. 1811.) This work by the author—a professor at the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture and permanent director of the Academy of Marseille—deals with the costumes, civil, domestic, military, and religious customs, and monuments of ancient peoples: Greeks, Romans, Hebrews, Egyptians, Persians, Amazons, Scythians, and other barbarian peoples. The 30th and 31st booklets contain interesting observations on elephants, with 8 plates entirely devoted to this animal. Water damage affecting the margins of booklets 28 through 31, primarily affecting the running title and certain engraved subjects; some leaves and plates are discolored. Binding is heavily rubbed with losses to the cap bands; the top box of Volume I is torn off (preserved).
