DAME ETHEL WALKER (BRITISH 1861-1951) SEATED NUDE WITH MANDOLIN Oil on canvas 91 x 71cm (35¾ x 27¾in.) Provenance: Sale, Christie's London, 20 June 1995, lot 62 Exhibited: Manchester, 1934 Walker became one of the leading artists of her generation, representing Britain on six occasions at the Venice Biennale between 1922 and 1936, as well as at the World Trade Fair, Chicago in 1939. She became particularly celebrated for her portraits and appears to have been a popular choice with her fellow artists; Lucien Pissarro, Orovida Camille Pissarro, a young Barbara Hepworth and Vanessa Bell number amongst her sitters. She was known for having a furious energy and a great confidence in her own abilities, as well as a determination to been seen as equal to her make counterparts. She was elected the first female member of the NEAC and in 1940, age 79, she was elected ARA. Three years later, Walker was awarded DBE, only the second female artist to gain such a recognition (Laura Knight having been similarly awarded in 1929). The present portrait is characteristic of Walker’s spontaneous, loose, almost impressionistic brushwork and the sensitive portrayal of her sitters.
