Crucifixion on Calvary. Italian School. 17th Century

Descriptio Oil on copper. Dimensions: 31.8 x 23 cm (43 x 34.5 x 6 cm with frame). A private devotional work depicting the Crucifixion of Christ on Calvary, with the Virgin Mary, Saint John, and Mary Magdalene at the foot of the cross, beneath a twilight sky. The meticulous brushwork and the luminosity of the copper lend the scene a spiritual vibrancy and a chromatic depth that accentuates its mystical dimension. The balanced composition, the delicate modeling of the faces, and the restrained drama are reminiscent of the Italian school of around 1600, particularly that of Bologna. The inscription on the back reads: “It comes from the old church of San Leonardo de la Croce on the Seine, ” adding considerable historical and devotional value. A piece of extraordinary quality and preservation, it is a prime example of the technical refinement of painting on copper in the early Baroque period.
