Ingravidity Oil on canvas · 53 x 82 cm · 2026 A swimmer descends face down, the body arched in a slow curve and the brown hair spread in the water like a mass of seaweed. We do not see her face: the head disappears into the hair and into the light, and the figure is reduced to the essential, a gesture, a line, a weight that has ceased to exist. The body is resolved with broad, color-packed brushstrokes: pale creams and pinks with turquoise shadows that reveal the water through the skin. In the lighter areas, such as the thigh and hip, the thick impasto, almost spatula-like, gives the body a sculptural presence against the transparency of the background. In the upper third, the surface of the water seen from below becomes an irregular mirror, with reflections of sky in whites and lavenders and warm blotches of ocher and burgundy that break the dominant turquoise. It is the most gestural zone of the canvas, where the oil imitates the instability of water. The contrast between that agitated edge and the calm background sustains the whole composition. An image of suspension and silence, within the artist’s series of submerged figures and the contemporary tradition of underwater swimmers painting.
