Copper relief - Jesus Christ with the crown of thorns...

Copper-signed relief This unique and monumental copper relief from 1944 is a beautiful example of high-quality religious folk art and artisanal craftsmanship in the midst of the war years. The impressive plaque shows a very expressive and detailed portrait of Jesus Christ with the crown of thorns, better known in Christian art as the iconic 'Ecce Homo' depiction. The artwork is entirely handmade using the traditional repoussé technique, whereby the image is meticulously formed from the back in the copper and later refined on the front. The maker has, with great attention to detail, applied the flowing hair, the distinctive beard, and the subtly raised blood and tear droplets on the face and neck, which makes the suffering and passion emotionally tangible. In the bottom right, the copper plate bears an authentic handwritten signature with initials and the exact historical date 8-1-1944. The plate is in a beautiful, characteristic condition with a wonderfully patinated finish that perfectly accentuates its historical appearance. This special and larger collector’s item is a valuable addition for enthusiasts of devotional items, religious art, and unique historical wall decorations. The lot measures 49 x 35 cm and weighs 1200 grams. The lot will be packed with the utmost care and shipped worldwide with Track & Trace.
