Founded in Paris on November 19, 1879, by Auguste Dumont, 'Gil Blas' was a daily newspaper known for its lively, literary, and sometimes risqué tone. The paper drew its name and inspiration from Alain-René Lesage's picaresque novel 'Histoire de Gil Blas de Santillane'. Gil Blas was also known for its illustrated weekly supplement, which contributed to its popularity and inspired similar publications abroad, such as the German satirical magazine 'Simplicissimus'. 40 x 28 cm. Heavy item! Approximately 5kg packed. This is the magazine that made Steinlen’s name, with colour covers, illustrated songs, and the stories of Belle Époque Paris. The magazine was named after Lesage’s picaresque hero A picaresque is a style of prose fiction that follows the episodic, adventurous exploits of a low-born, roguish hero who survives through wit, cunning, and mild dishonesty rather than traditional honor These covers show the world of Stenlein’s famous posters in weekly instalments. This is two complete years of Gil Blas illustré, 1899 and 1900, from the paper that serialised Zola and Maupassant. Steinlen made over four hundred drawings for it, and it was a model for Simplicissimus.
