Contemporary full marbled calf binding, spine ornamented with five raised bands, brown title and volume-number pieces, all edges red; wear at the head and tail, boards slightly rubbed. Very good interior condition. Ex-libris “de la bibliothèque de Monsieur de La Place de Mont-Evray” (label) and Faroughy (stamp on the title page and inside). Despite its general title, the work focuses very precisely on the contemporary history of the Persian Empire in the early 18th century. It relates in particular the major political crises, revolts, the fall of the Safavid dynasty at the hands of the Afghans led by Mahmud Hotak, and the wars that followed. To write this panorama, La Mamye Clairac relied on notes, direct testimonies and the memoirs of missionaries or European travelers who stayed in Persia at that time. It is a precious document for Western historiography of the Middle East, renowned for its factual precision.
