Circus voorstelling

Beautiful rendering of a carved meerschaum pipe; we see a circus performance with several figures; figure with a hoop ?, a circus artist on a running horse, a clown or Pierrot and a running dog with a hat on.. A particularly beautifully formed/vivid circus performance. Condition is good, the head of the man with the hoop has come loose once. At the bottom of the pipe there is a small hole, I don't know what it's for.. Complete with the original case from Amsterdam. The whole shows normal signs of use/age. Dating is around the late 19th / early 20th century. See all the photos please. (also for the measurements) They form part of the description. The item will of course be well packed and shipped. Please Note: The displays of plexiglass are not part of this lot. (these are only intended to optimize the photos) Good luck bidding! What is meerschaum? The word meerschaum comes from the German word Meerschaum meaning sea foam. People thought this stone formed from the foam of the sea. But meerschaum is simply a very beautiful mineral. It is a soft stone that is easy to work with. Meerschaum is light in weight and is first moistened before it is worked. With a sharp knife it is cut into the right shape and then it is polished. After polishing the form is dipped in white wax for about 5 hours. During the next step the meerschaum lies in the open air for about 16 hours, after which the meerschaum is polished with linen cloths. Meerschaum is mostly mined in Turkey. But because meerschaum is rare, it was soon faked. Real meerschaum is called block meerschaum. Fake is made from meerschaum waste mixed with glue. This material is less porous and that causes it to smoke less dry because it absorbs little moisture. Meerschaum pipes smoke cool and dry and discolor as the pipe is smoked. Note that you should never knock a meerschaum pipe on a hard surface, as this can cause the pipe to crack. Also with a pipe stem you should handle gently. Meerschaum is fragile and therefore must be treated softly. A meerschaum pipe is not for nothing called The White Goddess! Duco, D. (2009). Fables and facts about the meerschaum pipes. Sijzes, P. v. (1997). Van Dale Etymological Dictionary. Soetens, C. (1837). Scientific Monthly. The Hague.
