Property from the Murphy Family Estate Collection, Savannah, GA Description: Christopher Murphy Jr. (Sav, 1902-1973), 4 New York Etchings, comprising unsigned and pencil titled etching of street scene under Manhattan Bridge, numbered '#9' and titled on verso (with staining, toning, tear to lower left corner), unsigned archway with sign 'Leather' (good condition, some toning to paper), unsigned street scene with Hotel Astor and Times Square (foxing to paper and plate), and unsigned street scene under Manhattan Bridge, numbered '#9' and titled on verso (toning and minor foxing to paper, creasing to upper right corner); all unframed. Provenance: descended from the artist to the Christopher P.H. Murphy family collection. Christopher Murphy Jr. was a notable 20th century Savannah, Georgia artist. Murphy's artistic education started early as both of his parents were respected Savannah artists, and continued with formal training at the Art Students League. His superior technical skills allowed him to work in a variety of mediums and subject matter and he is best known for his city and landscape scenes of his home town Savannah. He was an active member of the Savannah Art Club and taught art classes around town. During his career his work was exhibited at the National Academy of Design, Art Institute of Chicago, New York Watercolor Club, American Watercolor Society, Sesquicentennial Exposition in Philadelphia, Whitney Museum, Victoria and Albert Museum, and the Southern Art League. His work is held in the permanent collections of the Morris Museum and the Telfair as well as in various private collections.Measurements: Height: of paper of archway 11 5/8 in. x Width: 9 1/8 in.
