Property from the Murphy Family Estate Collection, Savannah, GA Description: Christopher Murphy Jr. (Sav, 1902-1973), 4 Miscellaneous Etchings, comprising initial signed 'C.M. JR' etching of street view with house and line of trees (poor condition, foxing and toning to paper, tears and losses to edges and corners, significant folding creases to right edge, mat burn on verso), print signed lower left etching depicting Hermitage Plantation house (fair condition, with mat burn along the edges, losses and tears to edges, toning to paper), unsigned etching with people sketches and a hand-colored boat (toning to paper), and a hand-colored etching of a street scene with figures and inscription 'Barnard Street' within plate (minor foxing and foxing to paper); all unframed. Provenance: descended from the artist to the Christopher P.H. Murphy family collection. Christopher Murphy Jr. was a notable 20th century Savannah, Georgia artist. Murphy's artistic education started early as both of his parents were respected Savannah artists, and continued with formal training at the Art Students League. His superior technical skills allowed him to work in a variety of mediums and subject matter and he is best known for his city and landscape scenes of his home town Savannah. He was an active member of the Savannah Art Club and taught art classes around town. During his career his work was exhibited at the National Academy of Design, Art Institute of Chicago, New York Watercolor Club, American Watercolor Society, Sesquicentennial Exposition in Philadelphia, Whitney Museum, Victoria and Albert Museum, and the Southern Art League. His work is held in the permanent collections of the Morris Museum and the Telfair as well as in various private collections.Measurements: Height: of paper of street view with trees 11 in. x Width: 14 in.
