Chinese wall relief panel pendant

For sale is a rare, matching pair of traditional Chinese woodcarved relief panels with leaf gold inlay (so-called Chaozhou Giltwood). The special thing is that the two panels are thematically perfectly coordinated. They depict two opposing, complementary scenes. That is the perfect classical pairing for such Chinese relief pairs. This is the traditional concept of “Wen and Wu” (Culture/Peace & Military/War). This juxtaposition symbolizes the two pillars of a successful life and rule in ancient China: The court/palace celebration (Peace, Prosperity, Civilization, Scholarship) stands for civil happiness.. While the war/battle scene (Courage, Loyalty, protection from evil) stands for military strength. Such contrasting pairs tell a complete philosophical story. As objects like these were traditionally arranged in pairs in China, this set has been preserved in a beautiful, corresponding condition. The panels show intricate, three-dimensional and pierced battle scenes with horsemen and foot soldiers.. & a magnificently designed court/palace celebration with a ceremonial procession.. and a band below.. An absolute eye-catcher with impressive depth, originating from the late 20th century. It is nevertheless a decorative handcraft that imitates the classical Chaozhou tradition. Both pieces come from the same workshop and period. • Dimensions: each approx. 34 cm high x 18 cm wide • Quantity: 2 panels (Pendant) • Condition: As befits its age, very good 1-, great condition with a beautiful gold sheen. Minor not visibly age-related defects; 2 swords may be missing, which can occur with these delicate hand works.. One relief piece has the No. 103 scratched on the back. • Shipping: A carefully padded and insured shipment is of course included..
