Title Set of 2 antique Chinese gouache/watercolor paintings – ladies/ladies of the court – ca. 1880-1910 Description: Offered is a very special pair of two presumably antique Chinese paintings, executed in gouache and/or watercolor on paper, possibly rice paper. The works probably date from the Qing Dynasty, circa 1880-1910. The paintings each depict an elegantly dressed Chinese lady, presumably a noblewoman or court maid, seated next to a small table with a decorative plant. The subject matter and execution are characteristic of 19th‑century Chinese export art, wherein such refined paintings were produced for export to the West, among other things. The works are rendered in beautiful, vivid colors and convey a decorative and atmospheric presence. Both paintings come with an old wooden frame and glass. A notable detail is that the back of both framed works is fitted with a mirror, giving the objects a decorative function from both sides. Condition Given the probable age and the possible use of rice paper, the paintings show signs of wear and aging. These may include discoloration, light wear, and/or irregularities in the paper. The works are offered in their current state. Framed dimensions are 32x23x2.5 cm.
