Tutte le aste / Monete & Banconote / CHINA. Kwangtung. 7 Mace 3 Candereens (Dollar), ND (1889). Kwangtung

Highly Charming "Seven Three" Kwangtung Pattern Dollar CHINA. Kwangtung. 7 Mace 3 Candereens (Dollar), ND (1889). Kwangtung Mint (struck from Heaton Mint dies). Kuang-hsu (Guangxu). PCGS Genuine--Harshly Cleaned, Unc Details. L&M-123; K-16; KM-Y-198; WS-0931; Wenchao-552 (rarity: ★★★★). Created in what would prove to be a failed attempt to drive out lesser-weight foreign coins, this slightly heavier crown, along with its fractional denominations, quickly became unpopular with the public and was disbanded. An EXTREMELY RARE type that represents the initial output at Kwangtung, this series featured types and legends reversed from how they would otherwise be presented around the empire. In particular, the pairing of the inner Chinese characters surrounded by the outer English legends gave the appearance of the Ch'ing emperor being encircled by foreign influence. Given this reversed nature as well as the heavier weight standard, the crown became known as the "Seven Three Reversed Pattern." Though some hairlines from a prior cleaning are noted, this example remains without much in the way of actual wear, and with some pleasing color taking hold throughout. The name of this exceedingly elusive and important series emanates from the fact that the unit, or Dollar, was issued to the weight of 7 Mace 3 Candareens, rather than the weight that would quickly supplant it, that of the much more common 7 and 2. The "reversed" nature of the name comes from the fact that the outer legend on the dragon side was composed solely of Chinese characters, leaving the characters side--that bearing the name of the emperor at the center--surrounded entirely by English legends. This aspect was found unsuitable, causing not just a departure from the weight standard, but the overall composition of the design as well. Estimate: $75,000 - $125,000.
