Canadian. Watercolour by Lt. Philip John Bainbrigge (1817-1881) titled in script, "Chateauguay Blockhouse (near which the American army was defeated in 1813)". Wonderful detail. Bainbridge, a 1st Lieutenant in the Royal Engineers, was posted to Canada during the Rebellion of 1837-1838. Known as a skilled topographical painter during his tour of duty, in the spring of 1840, he mapped areas of Lower Canada on the border with the United States, including the site of the Battle of Châteauguay, which took place in late October 1813 near the confluence of the Châteauguay and English Rivers. Part of Bainbrigge’s responsibilities as an engineer surveying these territories was to assess the capabilities for defence of various places in Canada along this border. In addition, Bainbrigge recorded and reported on the condition and needs of existing fortifications. Library and Archives Canada have a large collection of his Canadian sketches. "Chateauguay Blockhouse" was illustrated in an article in "The War of 1812" magazine in November 2009. The site of the Chateauguay Blockhouse is located some 70 kilometres southwest of Montreal near Ormstown, Quebec. Ex. Joyner collection. Unsigned. C. 1837.
