Charles JOUAS (1866-1942) French painter, draftsman, engraver and illustrator, Charles Jouas was born in Paris in 1866 and died in 1942. A highly talented artist, he is distinguished by the finesse of his drawing, the remarkable precision of his compositions and his mastery of chiaroscuro. Trained notably with Georges Clairin, he developed a refined body of work, mainly devoted to urban landscapes, historical monuments and the Pyrenees. He gained genuine renown thanks to his masterful depictions of Gothic cathedrals, notably Chartres, Reims and Notre-Dame de Paris. He also illustrated several prestigious works, including La Cathédrale by Joris-Karl Huysmans. Appreciated for his graphic virtuosity and the richness of his architectural details, Charles Jouas leaves behind a body of work of high artistic and patrimonial quality. His works are now in major public collections, notably at the Petit Palais, the Carnavalet Museum, and the Pyrenean Museum of Lourdes.
