Pre-Columbian textile dolls from the central or southern coast of Peru. They recall the so-called funerary dolls (grave dolls) or textile idols, which were included as offerings in tombs. * Chancay culture The two grave dolls are, in the opinion of an expert, the most significant pieces. Such fully preserved Chancay figures with clothing, hair, and headbands are not frequently encountered on the European market. Lot 1 Peru, Chancay culture (ascribed) Anthropomorphic funerary doll Late Intermediate Period, ca. 1000–1450 CE Cotton, camelid wool and plant fibers. Large anthropomorphic textile figure with a rectangular head, embroidered facial features, and appliqued wool hair. The figure wears a woven headband with geometric decoration and a long woven robe. Several red cords wrapped around the neck and chest and textile appendages complete the depiction. Back side with dense wool hair covering. Height approx. 22 cm. Condition shows age-related wear, partial thread loss, and minor retirements, overall remarkably complete. Provenance: German private collection. Lot 2 Peru, Chancay culture Anthropomorphic funerary doll Late Intermediate Period, ca. 1000–1450 CE Cotton, camelid wool and plant fibers. Compact anthropomorphic textile figure with embroidered eyes, nose and mouth. Reddish woven headband, side-appliqued wool hair, and patterned body cover. At the bottom, remnants of an open net or woven pouch. The figure retains a large portion of its original textile adornment. Height approx. 22 cm Age-related defects, thread losses and wear. Provenance: German private collection. ⸻ Lot 3 Peru Pre-Columbian hand spindle with yarn Wood, spun camelid wool and plant fibers. Simple wooden spindle with wound yarn, together with a lot of unworked or partially prepared camelid wool. Comparable spindles are among the common grave offerings of Peru’s pre-Columbian cultures. Origin: Acquired from the heirs of a teacher who bought this object in the 1960s in Peru.
