Chair - Wood

Rocking chair in Thonet style, in bent beech and Vienna straw, Austria, early 20th century. Elegant example of Thonet production, this rocking chair perfectly embodies the technical and aesthetic revolution introduced by the Viennese company through steam-bent wood, a technique that marked design history between the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The frame, crafted in solid bent beech, stands out for the refined sequence of sinuous lines and volutes that define the arms, sides, and rocking base. The harmony of the curves, obtained through the innovative process of bending wood, gives the whole extraordinary visual lightness while maintaining great structural solidity. The high backrest and seat are finished in woven Vienna straw, a natural material that adds elegance, comfort, and brightness to the ensemble. The balanced proportions and the fluid motion of the rocking make this model a piece of furniture with great charm, able to fit naturally both in classical environments and in contemporary contexts. The exemplar preserves a pleasant original patina, with the natural signs of time bearing witness to its authenticity. The Vienna straw is overall well preserved, while the structure shows light superficial wear compatible with its age. There are also period restorations at the ends of the armrests, carried out in a stable and respectful manner to the piece’s integrity. An iconic piece of furniture that combines solid craftsmanship, formal elegance, and the timeless charm of Thonet workmanship.
