Rare and highly decorative French terrestrial globe published by Girard, Barrère & Thomas, Géographes-Éditeurs, 17 Rue de Buci, Paris, dating from the early to mid-1950s. A particularly attractive example thanks to its unusual minimalist three-legged iron tripod stand, giving the globe a distinctly Mid-Century Modern appearance. The original cartographic label reads: “GLOBE TERRESTRE – Échelle 1/65.000.000 – GIRARD, BARRÈRE ET THOMAS – Géographes-Éditeurs – 17 Rue de Buci, Paris (VIe)” The beautifully detailed French-language political map retains its vivid period colours and provides a fascinating snapshot of the geopolitical world of the early 1950s. Several historical geographical names remain visible, including the Belgian Congo, French West Africa, French Equatorial Africa, Northern and Southern Rhodesia, together with numerous former colonial territories. Israel is already represented and Libya appears as an independent state, helping to place this edition in the early to mid-1950s, approximately 1952–1955. The oceans are finely detailed with period maritime information and ocean currents, while the numerous historical place names make the globe particularly interesting from both a decorative and cartographic point of view. The sphere is mounted within its original dark metal meridian and rests on an elegant tripod structure made from slender iron rods, an unusually modern construction that gives the object a light, almost sculptural appearance. Condition: The globe is preserved in its authentic original patina, with age-related wear, light staining and oxidation consistent with its age. The cartography remains attractive and clearly legible, with strong original colours. One of the small rubber feet of the iron tripod is missing, as clearly shown in the photographs. This does not affect the stability or functionality of the globe.
