The painted surface correctly preserves the reading of the whole. 2. Description Attractive rural landscape of the late 19th-century Catalan school, executed in oil on panel and conceived in a wide horizontal format. The scene depicts a shallow watercourse crossed by a cow, with another cow appearing in the distance near a meadow. To the left, a set of rural architecture unfolds, headed by a masía with light-colored walls and tiled roofs, accompanied by several auxiliary buildings. On the right-hand margin, a small female figure introduces a narrative note and provides scale to the landscape. The composition combines the tranquility of the rural world with an attentive observation of light, vegetation, and architecture, within the tradition of Catalan naturalistic landscape painting developed during the last decades of the 19th century. 3. Stylistic and compositional analysis The painting presents a carefully structured composition through a marked longitudinal perspective. The riverbed acts as the true visual axis of the scene. From the foreground, occupied by the waters and the large stones along the bank, the gaze moves towards the cow in the center and continues to the buildings in the background. The painter effectively uses the different elements of the landscape to generate depth: - the large stones in the foreground; - the cow in the middle of the water; - the rural architecture; - the masses of intermediate trees; - and finally the bluish mountains on the horizon. The color range remains restrained and naturalistic, with predominance of ochres, dull greens, earth tones, light blues, and warm whites. The atmospheric treatment is particularly accomplished. The distant mountains appear softened by blue and violet tones, while the foreground retains a more substantial texture and stronger light contrasts. The brushwork alternates descriptive zones, especially in architecture and cattle, with freer and more synthetic execution in trees, vegetation, and stones. 4. Poetic and atmospheric dimension The work conveys an idealized yet deeply recognizable view of rural Catalonia at the end of the 19th century. It is not merely about representing a landscape, but about recreating a way of life tied to the territory: the masía, the cattle, the water, the path, and the human figure are integrated in the same environment. The scene is dominated by a sense of calm. The animal standing in the middle of the river constitutes the true emotional center of the composition. Its reflection on the water and the stillness of the surface create a moment of temporal suspension. The small figure on the right-hand shore also introduces a human dimension typical of rural landscape painting of the period, where the presence of peasants or travelers serves to emphasize the scale and monumentality of the surrounding natural environment. 5. Signature and attribution hypothesis The work appears signed in the lower right corner. The handwriting is visible, though its reading does not currently allow secure identification of the artist. It seems to be a short or abbreviated surname preceded by an initial, but any concrete identification would require a dedicated comparison of signatures. For this reason, and until a secure documentary attribution is available, we consider it correct to catalog it as: Catalan landscape school, late 19th – early 20th century. By technique and conception, the painting is part of the artistic milieu developed in Catalonia during the last decades of the 19th century, when landscape acquired increasing importance as an autonomous genre. Attention to the rural world, direct observation of nature, atmospheric clarity, and the incorporation of figures and livestock find numerous parallels in Catalan painting of this period. 6. Other points of interest The work is executed on a wooden panel, a support that provides a firm surface and allows precise application of the paint. On the back there are various old marks and seals related probably to the support or its commercialization, elements that form part of the material history of the piece. Special note-worthy details include the texture of the stones in the foreground, the reddish roofs of the masía, the vertical trunks of the trees, and especially the reflection of the cow in the water. Its wide horizontal format of 100 cm in width strongly reinforces its panoramic and decorative character. The painting is presented with a wooden frame accompanied by an inner gold moulding with vegetal ornamentation, which suitably complements the classical character of the landscape. 7.
