Casket - Wood - Antique painted chest

Large antique painted wooden chest with interior drawer – dated 1793 Special large antique wooden chest, featuring a characteristic hand-painted decoration and the year 1793 on the front. The chest has a richly decorated front with two large light panels, framed by a dark green/blue painted border. The panels are adorned with reddish-brown rococo-like scroll, flower, and leaf motifs. The decoration has a distinctly rural and folk-art appearance. A notable and striking element is the integrated wooden drawer on the left side of the interior. This drawer forms a separate storage space next to the main compartment and is a characteristic detail of this chest. The painting shows clear signs of age and long-term use, including craquelé, wear, discoloration, and local loss of paint. These natural signs of use give the chest an authentic and lived-in appearance. The large interior offers ample storage space. The chest is both a functional piece of furniture and a decorative object and stands out in an interior due to its size and painting. On the front the year 1793 is clearly applied. Based on the available information, it cannot be stated with absolute certainty whether 1793 is the original construction year or a date related to the original owner, a marriage, or the chest’s commissioning. Therefore the object is offered as a late 18th-century painted chest, dated 1793. The exact regional origin and maker are unknown.
