CANOE BOW Melanesia, Papua New Guinea, mouth of the Ramu River, village of Nimnim. Early 20th century Wood with a natural maritime patina H. 90 cm – W. 30.5 cm – D. 13 cm Provenance: Collected in the field by Crispin Howarth, curator at the National Gallery, Canberra, Australia, around 1990, who reported that this canoe was last used just before the Japanese invasion of New Guinea during World War II and had subsequently been abandoned. The bow of a large war canoe carved with a large and significant ancestral figure in the classic and powerful style of the Ramu River. The tip is adorned with the head of a stylized animal, a crocodile (?), with a large bird spreading its wings over the animal’s snout.
