In his career he raced for ONCE/Liberty Seguros, Discovery Channel, Astana, Saxo Bank Sungard/Tinkoff and Trek-Segafredo, turning professional from 2003 to 2017. He is currently a sports commentator on Eurosport. Labeled a legend, he is regarded as one of the great Grand Tour riders in the history of cycling, one of the best Spanish cyclists and one of the greatest athletes in the country's history. He stood out as a climber, his specialty, and as a time trialist, a modality in which, without being a specialist, he proved to defend himself quite well, achieving 9 stage wins, a fourth place in the Beijing 2008 Olympic time trial, and the Spanish National Road Time Trial Championship of 2009. In his palmarès, Contador has a total of 69 professional wins; he also won the UCI World Ranking in 2009. Among his most important victories are 7 Grand Tours (Giro d'Italia 2008 and 2015, Tour de France 2007 and 2009, and Vuelta a España 2008, 2012 and 2014) and 9 stage wins in the same races (3 stages in the Tour de France and 6 stages in the Vuelta a España), Paris-Nice 2007 and 2010, the Vuelta al País Vasco 2008, 2009, 2014 and 2016, and Tirreno–Adriatico 2014. He is the first Spanish rider to have won all three Grand Tours, a feat only achieved by the Frenchmen Jacques Anquetil and Bernard Hinault, the Italians Felice Gimondi and Vincenzo Nibali, the Belgian Eddy Merckx, and the British Chris Froome. Moreover, he is the third cyclist in history to achieve the Giro–Vuelta double, behind Belgian Eddy Merckx in 1973 and Italian Giovanni Battaglin in 1981. In 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2014 he was awarded the Golden Bicycle as the best cyclist of the year.
