It’s a textured abstract that relies entirely on the elemental contrast between sky and earth, between air and blood. Up high, a field of ochre yellow, antique gold, almost sun dust. The brushwork is dense, spatulated, alive – you can see the impasto, the cracks, the scratches. It isn’t a flat yellow; it’s a yellow that has lived, oxidized, warmed by time. At the bottom, a deep, visceral red. Wine, rust, a plowed field after summer. It’s heavy, earthy, it holds onto light rather than reflecting it. And in the middle, stitching the two worlds together, that ultra-thin green-copper line. A thread of malachite, moss, verdict on bronze. It’s the detail that saves everything from rhetoric: without it it would be only sunset. With it it becomes an interior landscape. It reminds me a lot of Rothko’s and Tamburro’s Color Field, but with a more Italian, more tactile physicality. It’s not digital meditation; it’s real matter. Why it works so well on the wall: In the photo it’s hung on a white wall, cut across by the shadow of leaves. And there you understand everything. It doesn’t need a frame, it doesn’t need a gallery. It’s a painting that tames light. By day it changes: the yellow part captures the sun and seems to ignite, the red stays there, warm, like a rug. By night, with artificial light, it becomes more dramatic, almost nocturnal. It’s a quiet work but not decorative. It doesn’t fill a hole. It takes possession of the wall. The texture is so rich that it deserves to be seen in person and touched almost with the eyes from very close. In the flesh it must vibrate. It’s one of those paintings that after a week you no longer see as an object, but as a presence in the home.
