Christ standing, facing on footstool, wearing cruciform nimbus, pallium and colobium, and holding book of Gospels with both hands; to left, IC; to right; XC. Rev: + ΚωΝ ΒΑCIΛЄVC O ΔOVK (Constantine Doukas, emperor). Eudocia on left and Constantine, bearded on right standing, facing, holding between them labarum, with cross on shaft, resting on three steps; each wears crown and loros. Reference: Sear, Byzantine Coins and Their Values, type 1853. These folles span the empire’s passage from the formidable reign of Basil II and the succession of Constantine VIII to the Ducas era. Basil’s victories expanded imperial power, while Constantine X favored the civil aristocracy and reduced military expenditure as frontier pressures mounted. The shift from anonymous proclamations of Christ as sovereign to portraits of Constantine and Eudocia shows sacred authority being joined to dynastic rule.
