Brutalist Judaica (2) - Cast brass - 1970-1980 - Shabbat candlesticks.

Beautiful set of brass candlesticks for Shabbat. Made and signed by W. Ohayon. The candlesticks have a pronounced modernist and brutalist style. This is recognizable by the clean, geometric base forms combined with deliberately rough, oxidized or patinated cast metal. Although it remains abstract art, the symbolism is very recognizable within the modernist Israeli art tradition. The skyline of the Old City: The sharp, vertical points in the texture mimic the iconic towers, slopes, and city walls of old Jerusalem. This silhouette (often called the "Jerusalem Skyline") is one of the most used motifs on traditional and modern Shabbat candlesticks. The texture of the Western Wall: The rough, layered structure of the bronze imitates the weathered, centuries-old limestone blocks of the Kotel. The artist's background: The surname of the maker, Ohayon, is a well-known Jewish name. Many artists from this movement (such as the well-known Israeli painter Avi Ohayon) live and work in Israel and consistently use Jerusalem and Jewish cultural history as their main source of inspiration. When the candles burn, the light also casts shadows over the relief, making the "walls of the city" come to life in a beautiful, atmospheric way. The whole is in good vintage condition with light signs of wear. Height 6.7 cm Width 4.8 cm Depth 4 cm Shipping by PostNL or DPD.
