Beautiful Chinese Imari porcelain plate in a French bronze mount, also called a "tazza" or fruit bowl. • Style: Chinese Imari, recognizable by the cobalt blue underglaze paired with iron-red and gold overglaze. • Decoration: Central medallion with a lattice/garden motif, surrounded by branches with chrysanthemums and peonies. Typical 18th century, Kangxi period (1662-1722) or later made for export. • Back: Glazed white, no mark. That is normal for Chinese export porcelain from that era. The mount • Mount: Gilded bronze, ormolu in Louis XV / Rococo style. • Details: The edge features a richly worked floral wreath, the two handles are in leaf/scroll form, and it sits on four graceful feet. • Origin of mount: Very likely French, late 19th century. In that period it was fashionable to “refine” antique Chinese and Japanese porcelain with expensive French bronze mounts. Thus: two parts, two eras 1. The plate itself: Chinese export porcelain, probably 18th century. 2. The bronze mount: French, ca. 1880-1900. This is called a marriage: an older porcelain object later mounted to increase value and decorative function. Very popular with the European elite in the 19th century. The mount bears stamped letters on the bottom The plate is 18th-century Kangxi? The quality of the painting and glaze looks good. • Condition: No cracks, chips or restorations to the porcelain.
