Tutte le aste / Monete & Banconote / Boston, Massachusetts. $2 1875. Fr. 391. The Continental NB. Charter

A Lightly Circulated $2 National Bank Note from an Iconic Boston-Based Bank Boston, Massachusetts. $2 1875. Fr. 391. The Continental NB. Charter #524. PMG Extremely Fine 40. Issued by an institution better-known for its $3 Obsoletes anchored by the so-called "Polar Bear Attack" vignette, this $2 National Bank Note does nonetheless represent a run of fortunate survivors on the Continental National Bank (Charter# 524) which was a conversion of the earlier Continental Bank that became a National Bank in 1864. Here signs of light circulation consistent with a numerical grade of "40" may be observed while no shortage of detail can be found throughout. The all-important vignette Stars and Stripes seen at left and the characteristic horizontal "Lazy 2" protector seen at center cut a truly impeccable impression met by the vignette Sir Walter Raleigh 1585 which accounts for the back design. Signatures attributable to Cashier Charles F. Smith and President Oliver Ditson may also be noticed in their respective panels and lend this note another proverbial laurel among its proverbial crown that should no doubt help command a truly premium realization for this once-ordinary financial instrument dating to the 1870s. PMG comments "Pinholes." Estimate: $8,000 - $12,000. Click here for certification details from PMG.
