A superb and fully complete 1976 Japanese pressing of Bill Evans Trio's landmark album Portrait in Jazz, issued on Riverside Records under catalogue number SMJ-6144. This Japanese Riverside edition arrives with the original ¥2,200 OBI strip and original Japanese liner-notes insert intact, making it a particularly attractive copy for collectors of Japanese jazz pressings. Originally recorded in New York on December 28, 1959, Portrait in Jazz captures one of the most celebrated piano trios in jazz history. The importance of this trio lies in the extraordinary musical interaction between Bill Evans on piano, Scott LaFaro on bass, and Paul Motian on drums—an approach where LaFaro and Motian operate as equal voices alongside Evans, a method that became enormously influential on modern jazz piano trio playing. The album includes some of Evans' defining interpretations, including "Come Rain or Come Shine," "Autumn Leaves," "Witchcraft," "When I Fall in Love," "What Is This Thing Called Love?," "Someday My Prince Will Come" and the Miles Davis/Bill Evans composition "Blue in Green."
