Rare and wonderful original photogravure by Bill Brandt (1904–1983) from 1961 with the title: – Hampstead, London 1952 – beautifully printed on light-weight paper. The photograph shows minor signs of wear, as seen in the image. The photo is being sold with its museum-quality mat. Image dimensions 251x217 mm Sheet size 258x228 mm Mat dimensions 50x40 cm Bill Brandt (British, born May 2, 1904—died December 20, 1983) was a photographer known for his photojournalistic work, documenting aspects of British life. Although born in Hamburg, Germany, he distanced himself from his German heritage and said he was born in London. He began his photographic career in France in 1929. France was a leading nation in the movement in which many artists used photography as an artistic expression rather than merely a documentary tool. During his stay in Paris, Brandt was influenced by the works of Man Ray and studied in his studio. After returning to London in 1931, Brandt was familiar with the language of photographic modernism. In the 1930s he published his important early monographs The English at Home (1932) and A Night in London (1932) and also became a frequent contributor to the illustrated press, particularly Picture Post, Lilliput, Weekly Illustrated and Verve. After World War II, Brandt's style shifted back toward the artistic, expressionistic style he had learned in his youth. He focused on landscapes, the nude, and portraits. Brandt embarked on a long exploration of the female nude and transformed the body through the angle and framing of the camera lens.
