Bible, 'Vinegar' version

The Holy Bible Containing the Old Testament and the New, Oxford: John Baskett, 1717/1716, large folio, title in red and black with engraving below by Vander Gucht, additional engraved title, NT title with vignette, some gatherings (or parts thereof) with toned papers, otherwise a good copy in fine morocco gilt binding (a few surface scuff marks), marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. An ink inscription at the front reads 'This Book was the gift of Mrs Wolryche to Mary Pitchford in the year 1760 which said Mary Pitchford was born March the 20th 1728 O.S. & married to Ed Gatacre October the 6th 1763 which said Ed Gatacre was born September the 11th 1735 O.S. by whom they had issue Ed Gatacre born at Dudmaston April the 16th 1768 which said Ed. Gatacre was married to Miss Lloyd Daughter of Robert Lloyd Esq. of Swanhill in the Parish of Silattin & had a son born at Swanhill February the 7th, 1806 Ed. Lloyd.', Consigned for sale by a descendent of the Gatacre family. The Wolryches of Dudmaston Shropshire held their estate in an unbroken line of descent through a male heir for hundreds of years. In 1701 the unexpected death of Sir Thomas left his widow Elizabeth to raise two young children. Elizabeth invited her brother Col. George Weld of Willey, Salop to help her manage the estate and household. Lady Wolryche’s teenage son laid out huge sums on his hounds, cockfighting and horses and was later drowned in the river Severn whilst returning from winning at Chelmarsh races. His sister never married. The ‘orphaned' Mary Pitchford was invited to join the household on the death of her mother where she became the favourite ‘daughter' of Lady Wolryche who encouraged the advances of her neighbour Edward Gatacre and their subsequent marriage. Lady Wolryche bestowed much of the furniture and library from Dudmaston on the couple as they rebuilt the ancient Gatacre Hall and raised a family. Only recently has it been determined that Mary Pitchford was the daughter of Col. Weld by Joyce Buckley, subsequently the wife of William Pitchford. Her portrait hangs at Dudmaston, now a property of the National Trust. Please register to request a condition report
