Beppe Ciardi (Venice, 1875 – Quinto di Treviso, 1932) Title: Sunset in the Lagoon Technique: Oil on cardboard Painting dimensions: 18 × 24 cm Framed dimensions: 41 × 46 cm Signature: bottom right Description of the work In this small and intense lagoon view Beppe Ciardi concentrates the image on the moment of sunset, when the light spreads along the horizon in a blazing band of oranges, pinks and purples, reflecting on the water and on the boats gathered in the foreground. The boats are resolved with few quick and synthetic strokes, while the distant line of the island on which a church spire rises remains barely suggested, almost absorbed by the light. The painting is tactile, sure and immediate, built through a broad and enveloping brushstroke, able to model shapes directly through color. Ciardi avoids any minute description and instead entrusts the construction of space to the relationship between the dark masses of the boats, the mobile reflections of the water, and the luminosity of the sky. The chromatic range, particularly vivid and bright, effectively conveys the atmospheric instability of the evening hour, transforming the view into a synthesis of light and color. The work fully belongs to the artist's most characteristic production, in which Venice, the lagoon and the Veneto countryside are interpreted with a luministic sensibility now autonomous from the paternal school, through a freer and more vibrant painting. Biographical notes Beppe Ciardi was born in Venice on March 18, 1875, son of the famous landscape painter Guglielmo Ciardi. After an initial university path, from 1896 he attended the Academy of Fine Arts of Venice, where he studied the figure with Ettore Tito, while receiving from his father the first fundamental education in landscape painting. He soon established himself in the major national and international exhibitions and participated regularly in the Venice Biennale; in 1912 an entire hall with forty-five works was dedicated to him, while the following year he won the gold medal at the Munich Exposition. He spent his life between Venice, the Asiago Plateau and Quinto di Treviso, devoting himself above all to the lagoon and Veneto landscape. He died in Quinto di Treviso on June 14, 1932. CONDITION REPORT Good overall condition, compatible with the era of the work. The painted surface is legible, with the coloring well preserved overall and the signature visible at the bottom left.
