This splendid and important prospect view constitutes the historical and geographical description of the Belgian city of Huy (Huvm, indicated in the German title as Hoy), included in the famous atlas Topographia Circuli Burgundici, published in Frankfurt on the Main from 1654 by the renowned Swiss-German engraver and cartographer Matthäus Merian. The plate describes with extraordinary accuracy and a richness of detail the urban panorama of the Walloon town, historically renowned for its strategic position along the Meuse valley, in the territory of the Prince-Bishopric of Liège. The composition, characterized by the refinement and descriptive realism typical of Merian’s engraving school, shows the city enclosed by its ancient medieval walls, on the left dominated by the imposing fortified castle (Li Tchestia) perched on the rocky promontory and in the center by the elegant profile of the Collegiate Church of Notre-Dame with its distinctive bell tower. The Meuse river partly traverses the landscape on the right, while the surrounding wooded hills form the backdrop to the scene, animated in the foreground by figures of wayfarers and riders along a country path. The upper part is adorned with an elegant scroll cartouche bearing the double title in Latin and German, balanced in the upper right corner by the official heraldic coat of arms of the city of Huy. The copy is presented in an excellent and pristine black-and-white state that magnificently highlights the freshness and depth of the original copperplate and the breadth of its margins.
