A superb original 1966 Japanese pressing of The Beatles’ four-track EP commonly identified by its opening track “Anna (Go To Him)”, issued by Odeon / Toshiba Musical Industries under catalogue number OP-4118. Released in Japan on 5 March 1966, this was the eighth Japanese Beatles EP and forms part of the highly collectible Odeon 33 Compact series. Unlike conventional 45 RPM singles, these Japanese Compact 7-inch releases were cut at 33⅓ RPM, allowing four tracks to be presented on a single 7-inch record. Most importantly, this is the striking translucent RED VINYL version. OP-4118 was originally manufactured on both black and red vinyl, with the red-wax copies forming one of the most distinctive areas of early Japanese Beatles collecting. The record retains the classic black ODEON 33 COMPACT STEREO labels with Toshiba Musical Industries manufacturing credits and is accompanied by its highly distinctive original Japanese picture sleeve. The poolside photograph and bold red Japanese design are unique to this market and make OP-4118 one of the more instantly recognisable Japanese Beatles EPs. The four-track programme is particularly interesting because it combines recordings from very different points in the group’s development: “Anna (Go To Him)” and “Boys” represent the energetic early Please Please Me period, while “You’ve Got To Hide Your Love Away” comes from the more mature Help! era. The fourth track, “Sie Liebt Dich,” is the Beatles’ German-language re-recording of She Loves You. On this release the other material is presented in stereo, while “Sie Liebt Dich” is electronically simulated stereo, making the EP an interesting pressing from an audio-variation perspective as well.
