BASAN (Pierre-François). Collection of engravings based on paintings from the collection of His Grace the Duke of Choiseul. Paris, Published by the Author, 1771. Small folio, red morocco leather, triple gilt fillet, decorated spine, green title label, inner wheel, gilt edges (contemporary binding). The collection is entirely engraved in intaglio, comprising a title page by Choffard, a portrait of the Duke of Choiseul, a dedication page, 12 pages of descriptions, and 128 plates. A very fine collection of prints, engraved after the magnificent paintings that the Duke of Choiseul (1719–1785)—ambassador to Rome and Vienna, and former chief minister to Louis XV—sold in 1772 following his fall from grace. Among the artists represented in his collection were Titian, Le Nain, Vernet, Hubert Robert, Wouwerman, Karel Dujardin, Ruysdael, and Rembrandt. A superb copy in period morocco leather, very rare in this condition. From the libraries of Édouard Rahir (III, 1935, no. 711) and Émile Moreau. A small, insignificant tear at the bottom of the margin of the double-page spread no. 74.
