Baroque style Column (2) - 20th century - Italian production

These two columns, majestic and almost mirrored, rise with dignity on a gray concrete floor, against a light, sober wall that enhances their ornamental richness. Once they were part of a single wider structure—perhaps a canopy, an altar, an architectural crown, or a grand display cabinet—and they were wisely separated and adapted to live a new life as two autonomous furnishings, identical in design and spirit, yet now independent. Both are entirely clad in warm, ancient gilding, interrupted by touches of silver that create a play of luminous contrasts. At the summit of each sits a capitello in the shape of a stylized flower, with fleshy, undulating leaves that open upward like a vegetal crown. On this bloom rests a small figure of a bird—perhaps a phoenix or an eagle—sculpted with finesse and finished in silver, which seems to perch delicately on the apex, almost watching over the whole. Under the capital, a series of rings and collars marks the shaft: some are adorned with small argent spheres recalling pearls, others with toro or Scottish profiles that rhythmically run up the column. The central shaft, cylindrical and gilded, descends gracefully until it meets a more elaborate intermediate zone, where acanthus leaves, rosettes, and carved floral motifs intertwine in a language typically Baroque or Rococo. Here silver reappears, highlighting volumes and giving depth to the decoration. The base of each column is sturdy and articulated: a can-shaped or chalice-like element, still gilded and silvered, rests on an octagonal or polygonal plinth with multiple steps, also richly worked. The two bases, like everything else, are almost perfectly symmetrical, a sign that the transformation from a unitary structure to a pair of autonomous furnishings was carried out with great attention to proportion and balance. In their new role, these columns are no longer simple structural elements: they have become two autonomous pieces of furniture, capable of supporting a mirror, a sculpture, a lamp, or simply standing as architectural sculptures in themselves. Their presence is solemn and at the same time refined; the aged gilding tells stories of representative rooms, of religious spaces, or aristocratic mansions, while the decision to separate them and make them twins places them now in a more intimate and contemporary space, where they continue to radiate light and memory. As the photographs show, they present some defects (see the photo carefully).
