BAI BAI NAPANGARTI, Mungai, 2007

BAI BAI NAPANGARTI Kukatja language, c.1939 - 2020 Mungai, 2007 acrylic on linen 100 x 50 cm bears inscription verso: Warlayirti Artists, 1000x500, Bai Bai Napangarti, 242/07 PROVENANCE Warlayirti Artists, Western Australia, Cat No. 242/07 Woolloongabba Art Gallery, Queensland Private Collection, Queensland Accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from Warlayirti Artists Bai Bai Napangardi (also known as Napangarti) spent her youth and early adulthood travelling across her ancestral lands, learning the laws, stories and cultural responsibilities that guide Warlpiri women's ceremonial life. She later settled at Yaga Yaga with her husband, the renowned painter Sunfly Tjampitjin, and together they began painting in the mid-1980s. Following his passing, Napangardi moved to the Balgo Hills community, where she became recognised as a senior law woman and important cultural authority. In this work, Napangardi depicts Mungai, Country located south of Balgo in the Great Sandy Desert. The painting speaks to the abundance of bush foods found across this Country, including tjirrilpatja (bush carrots) and kantjilyi (bush raisins). Napangardi describes the women gathering these foods and cooking them over small heated stones, drawing on knowledge of Country that has been passed between generations. The painting is an assured expression of Napangardi's relationship to Ngurra (Country), and of the knowledge held by Warlpiri women about the foods and resources it provides. It speaks to the close relationship between Country, sustenance and cultural knowledge, and to the importance of maintaining these connections across generations. © BAI BAI NAPANGARDI / Copyright Agency, 2026
