Rhonda Holy Bear (Cheyenne River Lakota, b. 1959) is a renowned Native American artist celebrated for her exceptionally detailed sculptural figures and contemporary interpretations of traditional Plains dollmaking. Drawing upon Lakota history, family stories, and cultural traditions, Holy Bear creates intricate works incorporating carved wood, hide, hair, feathers, porcupine quillwork, and painstaking glass micro-beading. Influenced by her grandmother, Angeline Holy Bear, the artist views her figures as visual storytellers and a means of preserving Indigenous history and cultural knowledge. Her historically informed clothing and regalia demonstrate extraordinary technical skill, with individual materials and decorative elements carrying cultural and narrative significance.
