Antique Dutch decorated coal scuttle – Hindelooper style – now as a umbrella holder – second half of the 20th century A particularly decorative Dutch coal scuttle made of painted metal, now excellently suited as a generous umbrella or walking stick holder. Due to its imposing tall shape, the dark green ground, and especially the exuberant hand-painted floral decoration, this is an object with exceptionally much atmosphere and character. The decoration is executed in the tradition of Hindelooper painting. Characteristic of this Frisian decorative art are the sweeping flowers, leaves, and tendrils in, among others, red, blue, green, white, and ochre tones. Museum Hindeloopen describes how such motifs were applied even before 1700 and how the painting art, after a revival from around 1880, developed strongly again. The tradition was continued into the 20th century as well. This specimen has a deep olive/dark green base, almost completely covered with painted floral motifs. Large red roses, blue flower clusters, black flowers, yellow accents, and ornate gold-colored leaves and tendrils together form a rich and colorful whole. The front is dominated by a large oval medallion with a typical Dutch landscape featuring a windmill, farms, trees, water, and a figure along the road. It was precisely such landscape scenes in medallions that later also became part of the Hindelooper repertoire. Contemporary practitioners of the craft also describe how, in addition to traditional flowers and garlands, landscape scenes became popular in the 20th century. From coal scuttle to umbrella holder The tall tapering form betrays the original function as a coal scuttle/coal holder. Such metal holders stood beside a coal stove or fireplace and were used to keep coal within easy reach and to replenish it. Noticeable are the two gold-colored handles on the back and the large diagonal opening at the top. The interior is finished in a strongly contrasting dark red, and the edge of the opening is gold-colored. Similar Dutch, hand-painted Hindelooper-style coal scuttles are nowadays often used as umbrella bins or walking stick holders. An almost identical type with a dark green ground, flowers, and a Dutch landscape with a windmill is described as an authentic Hindelooper coal scuttle and was installed in the second half of the 20th century. Based on design, material, painting style, and comparable examples, a dating in the first half of the 20th century is plausible, likely circa 1920–1940. There is no visible maker’s mark on the shown photos, so a specific painter or workshop cannot be named with certainty.
